Using macaroni as manipulative
May 18, 2010More on food
May 15, 2010
This week, Zann is learning more on food names and basic food groups. This time, I created a big food pyramid for her to match her toy food. It’s a chance of learning and playing, as well.
I didn’t want to confuse her so I focused on three main groups first.
She’s now familiar with vegetables and fruits. Sometimes, she says ‘Met” as meat.
Fast food is her favourite. We just had Subway burger for lunch.
Zann’s pictorial view of daily activities
May 13, 2010
I asked Zann to draw a picture of herself what she do every day and night.
She doesn’t remember the time spent with her friends in school.
Learning food group name
May 6, 2010This activity helps to teach the basic food groups we need and develop healthy eating. It would be good to use pictures of different food and ask your child to cut and paste accordingly to the right section.
I need more pictures. I NEED more magazines. Daddy refused to let me cut his collections.

I started Zann with the fruits and vegetables first.

I asked her to draw her favourite fruits and vegetables. Surprisingly, carrot was included leh. So we had baby carrot for dinner that evening. She didn’t like it at first, but changed her mind when I showed her drawing. It worked ! She took a few bites after that. Phew !
I used to have my doubts on montessori learning in the past. Someone told me that children coming from the montessori environment would have difficulty coping with the primary school curriculum.
Well, I listened and didn’t think much of it. I was like, how good can it be since it is a self directed learning environment.
I changed my mind after I switched Zann into her current centre.
Everything went well.
She enjoyed her phonics learning and has become more independent, which I think it’ s a good sign.
After knowing and having read through, plus working in the childcare environment has ‘broadened’ my mind.
There’s so much about early childhood learning.
Now I know taking care and teaching children at the same time is never easy.

Writing Chinese name
February 20, 2010
Zann managed to write out her Chinese name in full. A big improvement although her ‘jia’ was wrong.
Thoughts
February 3, 2010It happened again.
The previous night, Zann didn’t tell me anything except the hitting part. Not painful. And I didn’t think much either.
Today morning, I was informed by the principal what has happened. I was sad, though.
Thank GOD the boys didn’t do anything further.
Teacher Fern and the principal had informed the boys’ parents of what they had done to Zann. I had a long talk with the principal.
The first traumatised experience at the previous school was enough.
I know being bullied is part of the growing period. I want Zann to speak up for herself and retaliate. By knowing how to say NO and Stop.
I will have a good talk with her, tonight.
Saying ‘f’
February 1, 2010
To reinforce Zann’s speech development at home, I used ice cream sticks. To make her hear how f sounds, we just have to use this exaggerated method.

To produce F sound , top teeth on bottom lip and blow through the teeth to feel the air coming out.
The ‘S’ sound
January 27, 2010
Last week, I started Zann on the S sound. Sound in isolation is the first step on the speech ladder. Sound is practiced on its own without a vowel attached. She didn’t get all of them right, so I have to keep on trying.
I am still thinking on how to make this learning process more interesting.
